History

  • Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons, Inc.

Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons was founded by President Dr. Dev GnanaDev in 1996 when it was fully recognized as a corporation by the State of California. The group began modestly, with just four general surgeons who were hired to provide services at the old county hospital, San Bernardino County Medical Center, which was located in San Bernardino. Today, under the direction of Dr. GnanaDev, Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons stands as one of the few area surgery groups to contain such a varied list of specialists, including general, vascular, ear, nose and throat and plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists. Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons perform surgical procedures at ARMC, Desert Regional Medical Center, Riverside County Regional Medical Center and other area facilities.

Dr. GnanaDev and his group of surgeons played a key role in the verification of ARMC’s Level II Trauma Center, the busiest center of its kind in the County of San Bernardino for adult trauma care. Now verified three times by the American College of Surgeons, the trauma’s center’s unique distinction as a verified facility demonstrates that it has met the highest national standards for care of injured patients.

Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons doctors are also charged with medical direction of the Edward G. Hirschman Burn Center at ARMC, the only burn center covering San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Kern counties; and ARMC’s Level I Primary Stroke Center. ARMC became the first hospital in the County of San Bernardino to establish a national recognized stroke center, elevating the level of care for stroke patients in the Inland Empire.

At Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Dr. Javed Siddiqi of Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons founded the Institute of Clinical Orthopedics and Neurosciences (ICON), which offers comprehensive orthopedic and neurosciences services. Dr. Siddiqi also developed ICON’s Neurointerventional Program, to treat a wide array of neurovascular diseases.

Cal Med Physicians and Surgeons also helped to develop several residency training programs at ARMC, including general surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and psychiatry.
